Impossible choices are made every single day by millions of people around the world to either stay in their homes and risk arbitrary detention, torture or murder or attempt to flee on a dangerous journey where they may be kidnapped, human trafficked or killed.

Imagine if you had to make such a choice!

The UNHCR reports that there are currently more than 70 million people around the world who have been forced from their homes. 41.3 million are internally displaced within their own country and around 25.9 million have sought asylum in neighbouring countries, over half of whom are under the age of 18. In recent years in Australia the word ?Refugee? has received a great deal of prejudice; opinions that are not based on reason or any evidence. Refugees have been unfairly associated with negative stereotypes and attitudes which has led to a great deal of misunderstanding, discrimination and exclusion. Through this book we hope to demonstrate that to be a refugee is not a mark of shame or disgrace. Refugees are humans who have endured unbearable pain and suffering and made unimaginable sacrifices to save their loved ones or themselves. Through horrendous circumstances and defeat they found an abundance of inner strength and courage and they represent an astounding survival spirit. Refugees teach us how hope and faith can create miracles.

For the past 23 years Multicultural Families Organisation has had the privilege of supporting thousands of refugee families settling on the Gold Coast. We have comforted them through their tragedies, and rejoiced with them through their celebrations. We have assisted them to adapt and thrive in their new country and have seen the incredibly valuable contribution that their vibrant cultures have brought to our beautiful city. These are some of their inspirational stories of strength, resilience and survival and their long journey to their new home on the Gold Coast.
